Did you know that you can use ToolBook to create surveys and use your LMS to collect the information you collect?

The only thing that is required is ToolBook and an LMS which is able to show question level feedback in reports.

I have created a sample (download SurveySample.tbk) that you can download but will also explain what is required. You can also see it here.

The following ToolBook widgets are useful:

  • Rating (ie Likert Scale)
  • Multiple choice Question
  • Fill in the blank (especially the multiline feedback)

Here is a sample of a Rating/Likert Scale question

Survey1

You should name your question objects sensibly so you can identify the question in the LMS

Survey 2 - name your questions

When asking for people’s opinion it doesn’t make a lot of sense to have incorrect answers (and yes you DO want to get the negative feedback)

Since there is no correct and incorrect, then having immediate or delayed feedback isn’t really helpful either so just turn that off.

Survey 4 - Only correct answers and no feedback

Now publish the content and upload to the LMS and make it available to the relevant users.

The user launches the survey and answers the questions.

Survey 5 - make the survey available through an LMS

When the user has answered all questions they exit and mark the course as complete.

Survey 6 - answering the survey in the LMS

The users responses is now available the report section of your LMS. Some LMS allow you to export the report in PDF or Excell or similar.

Survey 7 - Question level detail in reports in LMS

Do notice how the name of the question and the name in the report is connected: a Multiple Choice object with Object id 8 on page id 1 named Survey1 will become  Survey1__P1_8 when published to SCORM.

I hope you have found this article usefull, as always questions and comments are wellcome.

Re: Using ToolBook to create Surveys

Tomas,
Thank you for a very interesting article (and perfect timing with my current project!)

I was wondering if there is an easy way that an end of course survey (or feedback form) could be submitted to a specific email instead of sending results to an LMS using ToolBook?

Kind regards,
Jennifer

Re: Using ToolBook to create Surveys

Hi Jennifer

(I hope you see this as I dont know your email adress so I cant notify you).
Glad to help. What you are asking is essentially how one can track ToolBook content without having an LMS. It is is possible - though a little more involved than what the above describes.
In your case I would use this approach: Use the action editor to collects the answers as the user responds and then use ToolBooks Action Editors HTTP post feature to send the results to a serverside page (.net or asp or similar) which then takes care or sending the email.

Feel free to contact me directly on my email adress tlund@elearningspecialist.com if you have any questions.

Best Regards
Tomas

Re: Using ToolBook to create Surveys

I follwed the directions plus I needed to have additional information added at the front end of the survey like instructors names, dates etc. When I published and ran it through our LMS I got the following error message when I finished and clicked the submit survey button. Any clues on what I did wrong or which xml files the error is referencing. Be gentle I'm not a programmer - just a developer new to LMSs.

CMI Service Error: LMSSetValue - Soap:Clien - server was unable to read request. --> Ther is an error in XML document (6,28). --> 'Element' is an invalid node type. Line 6, position 28.

Re: Using ToolBook to create Surveys

Hi Ray

In normal cases there shouldnt be any XML files for you to edit, so I am a bit puzzled by this. Are you possibly using the actions editor functions called LMSSetValue to override ToolBook SCORM/LMS behavior? If so that is fairly complicated and a bit beyond what this article describes. In any case can you provide some more details as to what you are doing?
Best Regards
Tomas

Re: Using ToolBook to create Surveys

Tomas,

That is what has me puzzled. I didn't hand jam any xml files or edit any existing files period. I published for SCORM 2004 and loaded the survey into our LMS that supposedly uses that version. I have used Dreamweaver to validate the xml files and I don't see this issue in any code. What xml file do you suppose is being referenced here and what is position 28? I got the line 6 part but that's about it.

If you want I can send the survey to your email. It just has 6 pages so I could test it before I got carried away with the entire survey.

I appreciate the time and maybe after I get some formal training with toolbook 9.5 I can figure this out on my own. Since Authorware is no longer supported by Adobe we are trying this tool to see if it is a viable replacement.

Thanks again
ray

Re: Using ToolBook to create Surveys

Hi Ray

I think the solution could be more simple than I originally thought. You should try running the Validate ToolBook File Tool which you can find from within ToolBook in the menu Tools/LiveExtensions. Then select the Devex tab and find the Validate ToolBook File tool in the list. Run it and fix ALL errors it displays (apart from any object of the page errors). Then republish, my guess is that it works now. A problem can manifest itself in many ways so you should fix all the problems even if it does not appear to be linked to the error.

Hope this helps. Let me know how it goes

Re: Using ToolBook to create Surveys

I ran the validate tool and it only returned one error and it was about a missing hyperlink for the MENU button I have hidden. I fixed it presto - still broke. I have contacted my LMS vendor and requested help. I have tested the survey on a SCORM 2004 test site (http://www.scorm.com/products/testtrack.aspx) and it appears to be functioning properly. I'll let you know if I ever find the disconnect. Thanks Ray

Re: Using ToolBook to create Surveys

Hello Tomas,
My search for solutions to Toolbook-related problems brought me to this site. Thanks for the letting us know on how to use Toolbook to create surveys. Wondering, if you could help me on the following:
As part of the LMS-rollout, our team released 4 courses to employees. 2 of these courses were developed using Toolbook and the other 2 were developed in Flash + HTML. We created the Toolbook courses using objects from the Catlog and it also included scored software simulations. The course works well and the score displays correctly on the last page of the Assessment. However, the LMS does not display the tracking status and the score. The status remains as "Not Attempted" and Scores displays as ----%. What could be the problem? I have used the "Exit" button from the Catalog for all screens and "Exit (mark as complete) button for the last screen. The LMS is a Sum Total LMS. The courses developed outside Toolbook tracks perfectly on the LMS.
Will appreciate your help as tracking and scoring is really important for us.

Regards,
Vinaya

Re: Using ToolBook to create Surveys

Hi Vinaya

First thing that springs to mind is if you have published to SCORM 1.2 or 2004 when going through the publish to web wizard? Also sometimes a manual refresh of the browser window might update the status
Let me know if any of these answers does the trick
